Copilot Cowork: When AI Becomes a Colleague
Copilot Cowork is effectively a new team member. It goes beyond answering questions by independently executing tasks over minutes or even hours. To do so, it leverages the organisation’s apps and data within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
The technology is built on Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, directly integrated into Microsoft 365 and combined with Microsoft’s “Work IQ”—the complete context of an organisation’s digital work history. Copilot Cowork operates entirely within the M365 tenant, protected by existing security and compliance policies.
«This enables even SMEs to leverage agent-based capabilities without exposing themselves to additional risk,» says Sven Heeb, Cloud Solution Architect at Baggenstos. «It marks the beginning of the agentic workplace—where humans and AI don’t just coexist, but truly collaborate.»
What Copilot Cowork Can Do
Copilot Cowork applies advanced reasoning capabilities provided by Anthropic to understand tasks and develop structured execution plans. It then works through these step by step and delivers the outcome.
It can draft documents, compose emails and invitations, analyse Excel datasets, and build presentations—always keeping the user in the loop. «The organisation remains fully in control at all times,» adds Sven Heeb. Current limitation: task triggers are currently time-based only and cannot yet be dynamically driven by customer inputs or conditional logic.
Where Copilot Cowork Delivers Value
From Baggenstos’ practical experience, Copilot Cowork is particularly effective in environments with high volumes of research, repetitive tasks, and standardised processes.
Example Use Cases
- Project status & reporting: Let Copilot search across your data instead of manually opening and reviewing documents—including meeting transcripts and repository changes.
- Optimising internal expertise: Capture internal knowledge as structured “skills”. Copilot can then act as an in-house legal advisor or provide sales teams with expert-level insights.
- Email management: At scheduled times, Copilot can scan inboxes, prioritise messages, draft replies, and create tasks. Combined with skills, emails can be generated in specific roles or tones—ideal for standardised communication.
- Smart calendar management: Copilot analyses calendars, identifies scheduling conflicts, and proposes optimal meeting slots—while protecting time for deep work and recovery.
- Briefings: Automatically compiles information packages, for example on meeting participants or market developments.
- Project management & automation: Manages project tasks, creates launch plans and documentation, and flags risks if projects deviate from plan.
- Customer documentation: Continuously aggregates customer data and updates records in real time, enabling early identification of relationship risks.
